CHAPTER 5

FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD . . . TO THE END OF THE LINE

The law, by this time, had got the right needle with us, so Ron and I decided we should go to Tangier to get out of the way for a while. Ian Barrie said he would like to come, too. We decided to hire a small plane off the coast at Dover, and we stayed the night in a hotel there.

The flight was organized so as to avoid the customs and the police at any of the London airports. We were ushered through customs by our pilot as arranged—part of his fee was for organizing this.

After a lot of journeying, we ended up in Tangier, Morocco, where we met our old friend and influence Billy Hill at his villa, just on the outskirts of the town. He and his wife Gypsy made us very welcome. We could not have wished for better hosts. A few days later, a friend of mine, Christine, joined us from London. She brought news that the police were going round the London haunts trying to get people to make statements against us. This gave us added incentive to stay in Tangier.

Christine had a good nature and a likeable personality, and I was pleased to have her as my constant companion. She is still one of my best friends today.

We would drink each night in Churchill’s, the club Bill and Gypsy ran in the middle of Tangier. Churchill’s was the best club in Tangier. Bill had bought the place to give to Gypsy as a special kind of toy. He told me this over a drink one night. The clientele was fascinating. Rich Arabs in white flowing gowns used to frequent the place, sitting at the tables deep in conversation while a band played music. One of the most popular tunes was Strangers in the Night.

The flower boys used to wait outside the club each night for Ron, Ian, Christine and myself to arrive. They would sell us bunches of the most beautiful blooms which we gave to Gypsy. Gypsy owned two large poodles which would keep her company in the club. They would not let anyone go near her. She wore the loveliest jewellery I have ever seen. Bill thought the world of her, and showered her with gifts. They were a charming couple. He was one of the best gamblers in the world. He made a fortune out of it, as well as being one of the most successful criminals ever to come out of London.

Bill arranged for us to have an apartment on the edge of Tangier. It was just a hundred yards from the beach. We would go swimming and sunbathing each day, and would sometimes drive to the centre of the town where we would use one of the best hotels and the adjoining open-air swimming pool. We would also visit the Casbah and frequent various different clubs in the area.

Billy had a white MG sports car at the time, as well as a saloon car.
